Money Management Services
The Area Agency on Aging of North Central Texas contracts with the Senior Source to provide money management services. The Money Management Program is funded in part through the Older Americans Act and supported by AARP. Services are provided at no cost to clients by trained, insured, and supervised volunteers.
The Money Management Program targets older persons with limited incomes who have difficulty managing their personal finances and are willing to accept help.
Specifically, the program targets individuals with annual incomes of $31,683 or less, and couples with annual incomes of $38,202 or less. In addition, individuals and couples should have liquid assets of no more than $100,000.
Types of Services
Clients may receive either Bill Payer or Representative Payee services.
- Bill Payer: A volunteer bill payer provides at least monthly assistance to clients who agree to services. The bill payer may develop a list of monthly income and expenses, prepare checks to pay bills, maintain the checkbook register, and balance the checkbook. The client signs all checks. The volunteer bill payer is not expected to authorize or sign checks.
- Representative Payee: The representative payee provides at least monthly assistance to clients who agree to services. The Payee may organize and pay bills from a designated account, maintain the check register, and balance the checkbook. The Payee is authorized to receive checks in the client’s name and write checks on the client’s behalf.
Are you interested in helping older adults manage their money and remain independent? You can make a difference as a volunteer bill payer if you meet the following qualifications:
- Have a general knowledge of household budgeting and personal financial management;
- Are accurate in maintaining financial records;
- Are patient and tactful, and can work well with a wide variety of people, including those who may have physical and/or mental impairments; and
- Are willing to provide your own envirportation to visit clients.
All volunteers must pass a criminal history check and go through training. On average, volunteers spend eight hours a month assisting clients. A one-year commitment is requested.
